Barack Obama made one of his few political mistakes when he nominated Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) for Vice-President. Selection of Hillary Clinton would have assured the Democratics of certain victory. With Hillary Clinton on the ticket, the Republican Convention would have received no attention and it is extremely unlikely that Sarah Palin would have been nominated as Vice-President.
Obama can still salvage the situation by taking a lesson from history. John C. Calhoun resigned as Vice-President to take a seat in the Senate. Obama should ask Joe Biden to resign as the Vice-Presidential nominee in order to act as a foreign policy leader in the Senate or be named as Secretary of State. If Joe Biden is really committed to his party he will voluntarily step-down from the nomination as soon as possible. This would be a win-win situation. I cannot imagine that anyone would really complain and the reality is that in the history of American politics American Presidential nominees have often won elections by naming their toughest opponents as running mates.
The mark of leadership is to admit when you have made an error and to correct it. Hillary Clinton should be instated as the Vice-Presidential nominee. This would galvanize the Democratic party and would show that Obama can correct his mistakes.
