Prominent Neurologist Questions Joe Biden’s Fitness to Run For Vice-President

A very prominent neurologist has publicly announced that more needs to be known about Joe Biden’s health.  “The issue here is an assurance to the voting public that the man who is a heartbeat away from the most powerful office on earth has the best possible chance of surviving his term” wrote Steven Lomazow, M.D, the Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

In 1988, the Senator underwent surgery twice, once on each side of the brain, to treat a ruptured blood vessel supplying the brain.  The first surgery dealt with a ruptured aneurysm and the second surgery on the other side of the brain was to prevent a rupture of another vessel. The neurologist suggested that the Vice-Presidential should release his medical records and possibly undergo further testing to determine if the condition is stable before taking office if he is elected.

One of the complications of aneurysms and surgerical treatment can be permanent behavior changes. A stroke can occur from the blood vessels going into spasm at the time of the rupture or there can be damage from the need to lift up or “retract” the brain in order for the surgeon to see the abnormality at the time of surgery. Usually if only one side of the brain is involved there are no behavior changes, however, if both sides of the front of the brain called the frontal lobe are involved, then patients may have exhibit some behavioral abnormalities called “frontal lobe syndrome”.

The Senator has been noted to make strange remarks and gaffaws for many years causing many Democrats to question if he was an appropriate running mate. Some recent examples of strange comments include “I’ve had a great relationship [with Indian Americans],” Biden said. “In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.” when he met an Indian immigrant. On the day he formally announced his candidacy, a New York Observer story that quoted Biden as calling Obama “articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy”

Now the investigation requested by Dr. Lomazow may explain it.  To be fair to Senator Biden, no assumptions should be made about his condition which is best determined by his treating physician.
